Engines are broadly categorized based on how they convert energy into motion, the type of fuel they consume, and their physical architecture.

1. Fundamental Energy Conversion
  • Internal Combustion Engines (ICE): Combustion occurs inside a chamber, driving a piston or turbine. These are the most common engines for transportation.
  • External Combustion Engines: Combustion happens outside the engine (e.g., in a boiler), heating a working fluid like steam to create motion. Examples include steam engines and Stirling engines.
  • Electric Motors: Convert electrical energy directly into mechanical energy using magnetic fields. They are increasingly used in modern Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

2. Internal Combustion Engine Layouts
Engines in cars and aircraft are often categorized by the physical arrangement of their cylinders:
  • Inline/Straight: Cylinders are arranged in a single row (e.g., Inline-4, Straight-6).
  • V-Engine: Cylinders are arranged in two banks at an angle, forming a "V" shape (e.g., V6, V8, V12).
  • Flat/Boxer: Cylinders are horizontal and move in opposite directions, providing a low center of gravity.
  • Rotary (Wankel): Uses a triangular rotor instead of reciprocating pistons.
  • Radial: Cylinders radiate outward from a central crankshaft, commonly used in older propeller aircraft.
3. Fuel and Ignition Types
  • Spark-Ignition (Petrol/Gasoline): Uses a spark plug to ignite a fuel-air mixture.
  • Compression-Ignition (Diesel): Compresses air until it is hot enough to ignite injected fuel without a spark plug.
  • Alternative Fuels: Engines designed to run on Natural Gas (CNG), Hydrogen (FCEV), or Biofuels.
4. Specialized Propulsion
  • Reaction Engines (Jet Engines): Produce thrust by expelling exhaust at high speeds. Variants include turbojets, turbofans, and rockets.
  • Hybrid Systems: Combine an ICE with an electric motor to maximize efficiency (e.g., Parallel, Plug-in).
